October Meeting
October 4's Chapter meeting featured Dr. Joe Martin discussing bridge safety.  Fortunately, Joe was prepared with handouts for everyone since the Spaghetti Warehouse meeting space was not  conducive for a digital projector.  The theme of the presentation was using modern instrumentation and monitoring devices to measure the 'health' of a bridge similar to what is done in the medical profession.  Steel bridges almost never fail, but when they do - not surprisingly - it's at the weak points: the bolts, pins, welds, plates or other connectors that hold steel struts together.

Text Box: President’s Message
Greetings to my fellow
professional engineers!  The
Fall season is upon us and as
usual, it brings the start of the
fiscal year for PSPE.  As you
know, we had the first general
membership meeting of this
administrative year on October
4, 2007 and it was a very
successful meeting.  The
location, Spaghetti Warehouse,
was interesting and spacious.  Our honored guest speaker, Dr. Joseph Martin, P.E., Professor of Civil Engineering at Drexel University, gave us a very interesting talk about bridges in Philadelphia.  You can read more about this meeting in this issue.

PSPE, like any other organization, is seriously dwindling in membership.  There are various reasons for this decline but I need not discuss them here.  However, it is important to work towards increasing membership.  It has never been this easy to sign-up new members, through the NSPE website.  Therefore, I seek your help in recruiting new members to join our chapter.  Please encourage your engineer-friends and colleagues to join the Society.  I believe there are thousands of Engineers (and hundreds of them with P.E. license) in Philadelphia County.  I am therefore requesting your help in getting more engineers and engineering students to join the Society.

The next general membership chapter meeting, on November 1, 2007, will feature our top officer at the State PSPE level.  PSPE President, Leonard Bernstein, P.E., F. NSPE, will discuss the state of the state society, issues affecting the engineering profession and legislative issues affecting the engineering society.  I am sure this meeting is going to be very informative, so come one come all.  The upcoming meeting has been designated as Past Presidents Night.  I am hereby inviting all chapter past presidents to come out and be recognized at this special meeting.  Last but not the least, we are also inviting candidates for the 2008 Engineer of the Year (EOY) in Delaware Valley to come and present themselves to their constituent, many of whom are delegates and will be voting for the EOY in the following week.  Details of this meeting are provided in this issue.  Please call Richard Mulford, P.E., at (215) 985-5701 to make your reservation.  I hope to see you there!
Many thanks,
